Jean Claude Berrouet, a history of excellence...
Petrus for 50 vintages and working for such amazing producers
such as Dominus, Chateau Magdelaine and Trotanoy
Vieux Château Saint Andre is owned by the Berrouet family. Jean-Claude Berrouet was the producer of Petrus for 50 vintages and working for such amazing producers such as Chateau Magdelaine and Trotanoy.
His talents lie as an oenologist and he has created wines of supple character and distinct beauty. Jean-Claude also served as a technical consultant to Christian Moueix at Dominus Estate in the 1980’s.
Jean Claude says: "A wine should tell you the story of the place it came from. Innovations and change are important, but there should be limits on techniques that a winemaker can use and still have a wine classified as Bordeaux. If I am a conductor playing Mozart, can I add a note to it? Pretentious men do this. As long as I can make a living doing what I do, I will resist the move to a standard taste.”
His son Jeff now assists in managing Vieux Chateau Saint Andre and they use the same techniques to produce the Merlot here as his family is using at Petrus.
The wine itself is superb, showing a wonderful mix of ripe dark cherries, currant, spices and mineral, which burst from the glass. It possesses wonderful concentration and balance along with a velvety finish that lingers on. Today the wine is accessible, but also has lovely ageing potential as well. Any lamb dish will serve this wine well, as the acidity is fine and focused. Gamey fowl is an excellent match such as game hen or a quail with a cherry drizzle.
Cheers and Bon Appetit!

"The nose is full of aromas of spice, herb and cinnamon pine. On the palate, it’s full and expressive of dark fruit such as blackberry and black cherry. The tannins are extremely approachable with spicy, savory overtones that are well integrated and balanced. A soft supple finish of black pepper, dark wet earth and hints of forest floor. This wine is joy to the senses and to the palate."
