A terrific modern variation on the classic Roussillon style.
The 2012 Domaine Cabirau Côtes du Roussillon is a delicious blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Carignan. The flavor profile offers waves of juicy black raspberry, augmented by Middle Eastern spices. The schist soils of the Roussillon have also imparted a strong minerality.
The mid-palate shows off more herbal notes as well as luscious floral flavors. This wine strikes a balance between the Old World and the New; it is juicy but refined, full-bodied but not overwhelming, and richly tannic without leaving a dusty feel in your mouth. It also boasts a lingering, succulent finish. A truly excellent wine for an excellent price!
Wine Advocate, David Schildknecht, 92 Pts., Jan. 2014:
"Delivers lusciously ripe black raspberry laced with sage, horehound and smoky black tea, and garlanded with heliotrope. As usual with this cuvee, there is a brightness and seed-crunching ‘ping’ that convey energy and invigoration to an infectiously juicy finish. Here is a stupendous value that projects distinctive Roussillon virtues including downright dynamic interactivity. I suspect that it will show well for the better part of the decade if not beyond. Importer-proprietor Dan Kravitz has once again scored terrific success – and you will score astonishing values!”
"Below the ancient Cathar fortress of Queribus is a vineyard owned by importer Dan Kravitz. 25 and 60 year old Grenache vines planted on schistous soils are complemented by older leased and newly planted Syrah and Carignan. The Grenache planted on schist yields opulent yet firm wine perfectly complemented by the backbone of Syrah and Carignan, offering intense red and black fruit flavors, redolent of mountain herbs. Approachable now, this wine will accompany fine meals of lamb, game or vividly flavored vegetable dishes for years to come.”
