Michel Rolland has notched up more achievements than most of his peers: the world's most famous winemaker consults to dozens of properties across the globe including
Harlan,
Dalla Valle and
Rudd in Napa Valley, California. He is probably responsible for creating more coveted
Parker points than any other winemaker. One of his less famous, but equally remarkable achievements, was to persuade a group of six Bordeaux wine families to unite for a $50 million joint venture in Argentina with Mr. Rolland overseeing all wine production.
He had seen the potential in Argentina's soils and high altitude vineyards from his experience working as a consultant there since the 1980s, so he set up the Clos de los Siete project. The Uco Valley, a high-altitude area about 50 miles south of Mendoza, has, in the last five years, become recognized as the most exciting new quality region in the country. Malbec does exceptionally well in the region and Rolland states: "[grapes with] an incredible personality . . . without doubt the varietal from Argentina." Not suprisingly, Malbec forms about 50% of the blend of Clos de los Siete, with the balance being Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
The wine is made in classic Rolland style. Yields are low, the grapes are handled with utmost care (hand-picked, gravity-fed in the winery and no pumping allowed) and the wine is matured in new French oak prior to release. There is no fining or filtration. The resulting wine is big and dense, rich and fruit-driven. If Rolland makes it, the Parker points will come - 92 of them for the 2006 vintage. His notes with our emphasis: "The 2006 Clos de los Siete is a slightly different blend with 50% Malbec, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Syrah. Opaque purple-colored, it has a similar expressive nose including fragrant plum, blueberry, and black cherry. Ripe, sweet, and seamless, it admirably hides its tannin under all the fruit. It will evolve for several years but who will have the willpower to defer gratification? It is an awesome value."
