Is it starting to sound like Chardonnay week at the
Duke? Well, worse things can happen! Some California Chardonnays are made with a lot of oak exposure to give the toasty, creamy flavors and textures that many enjoy. Lately, there is a trend to produce Chardonnay that is crisp and minerally, in the Chablis model, no oak, no malolactic and limited exposure to lees. This style demands perfect fruit, since there is no oak to camouflage less than ideal fruit flavors. Which brings us to
Mer Soleil 2006 Silver.
Silver uses Chardonnay grapes grown in special blocks of the Mer Soleil Vineyard, which is at the cooler northern end of the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA. Charlie Wagner II (son of Chuck Wagner of Caymus fame) oversees the vineyard and makes this fresh, luscious wine. There are plenty of vivid pear, citrus, green apple and pineapple flavors and juicy acidity, a hint of minerality and a long finish. Charlie says he's trying to combine the crisp mineral essence of Chablis with the tropical elements of California Chardonnay. Take it from us, he has not only hit a home run, it's a grand slam!
The Duke hits a home run in his turn at bat, too! Normally retailing over $40.00, we have this succulent beauty for just $27.95 per bottle, one of the lowest prices in the entire US of A!
