"An Evening of Ports and Madeiras"

With Special Guest Speaker

Bartholomew Broadbent

Dear Wine Associates:

It is a great pleasure to invite you to join us on Tuesday, October 5, 2004, to welcome MR. BARTHOLOMEW BROADBENT and the WINES OF PORTUGAL AND MADEIRA. We have planned a fascinating presentation that will help unravel the often mystifying world of fortified wines.

Bartholomew Broadbent is a lively, witty and informative wine lecturer and one of the world's foremost authorities on Port and Madeira. He is credited with being responsible for the growth of Port consumption in North America during the 1980s and was responsible for the re-introduction of Madeira to America in 1989. He was raised in the English wine trade in a formal apprenticeship to his famous father, Michael Broadbent, M.W. His Dad, who is his number one fan and supporter, founded the Christie's International Wine Auction in 1966 and remains its Director to this day. He is the author of several editions of The Great Vintage Wine Book, which is considered by many connoisseurs to be the greatest book ever written on wine! His is the senior contributor to the London-based Decanter Magazine, for which he has written over 300 articles.

Bartholomew has worked in London for Harrod's wine department, Harvey's Fine Wine Merchants in Pall Mall and Christie's. He worked in Australia for Rothbury Estate and Yalumba Winery. In France, he worked in Cognac for Hennessy and in Paris for L'Academie du Vin. In 1996, he founded his own company, Broadbent Selections, Inc., the exclusive U. S. National importer for many of the world's most sought-after family wineries. He currently resides in San Francisco.

PORTS, many of which are always included in the lists of the world's greatest wines, are produced in northern Portugal in a delimited district along the Douro River. They are fortified wines that, when bottled, contain 19-21% alcohol and about 9-10% residual sugar. There are many styles of Port, but the two broadest categories are bottle-aged and cask-aged. MADEIRAS come from the Portuguese island of Madeira, which lies 400 miles off the coast of Morocco. The wines are "baked," fortified and sweetened according to the style desired. They can be magnificent apéritif or dessert treats.

All of the wines for this seminar were chosen by Bartholomew and his talented Sales Manager Justin Gallen, who is a true expert in his own right and who also will be present this evening. We will feature two Portuguese table wines, a variety of Ports from Quinta do Crasto, Ferreira and Broadbent Selections, and four outstanding Broadbent Madeiras (all hand-selected by Michael Broadbent). We encourage you to join us for this special evening which promises to be not only educational, but extraordinarily entertaining. Bartholomew is a true super star in the world of wine!
