Dear Wine Associates:

It is our pleasure to invite you to join us to welcome "THREE SPECIAL FRIENDS" on Tuesday, September 18. 2007, for the second in our series of wine seminars celebrating the 40th ANNIVERSARY of the DUKE OF BOURBON!!! Our first event in July was extremely successful and this event promises to be just as special. Our idea is to feature wineries and wine personalities who have contributed to our success in bringing so many of the world's greatest wines to our appreciative customers. All three of our "special friends" have played major roles in helping their respective growing areas become known world-wide - PHIL WOODWARD from Monterey County, LARRY MAGUIRE from Napa Valley, and DOUG MARGERUM from Santa Barbara County.

We first met Phil Woodward in the early 1970s after he and Richard Graff teamed up to establish the original Chalone Vineyard in the Pinnacles area of Monterey County. What great memories we have of their first Pinot Blancs, Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. They were the rarest and very best of their time. In fact, the Chalone Vineyard 1978 Pinot Noir is still considered by many wine aficionados to be one of California's finest. Another significant factor in the relationship between Chalone and the DUKE was our partnership in creating the Chaparral brand of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, our superb private label wines. The deal we made then eventually led to the creation of the Edna Valley Vineyard in San Luis Obispo. You probably know that Chalone was sold many years ago and now is quite a large producer. In his "retirement, Phil Woodward is operating the Woodward/Graff Non-profit Foundation and marketing the outstanding Graff Family Vineyards wines (think original Chalone quality) in honor of his friend and partner Richard Graff, who died in an airplane crash in 1998. We have fond memories of our friend "Dick" Graff, too, and we are thrilled to have our "special friend" Phil here to help us present these wines to you. As a special treat, each family in attendance will receive a copy of Phil's engaging book, Chalone: A Journey on the Wine Frontier.

Larry Maguire and the DUKE have been friends since the early 1980s. Larry is now President and partner of Far Niente Winery in Napa Valley as well as a partner in both Nickel & Nickel and Dolce. We have watched Far Niente grow into one of the finest wine estates in the world under the guidance of Beth & Gil Nickel (unfortunately, our good friend Gil passed away in 2003) along with Larry and Director of Winemaking and partner Dirk Hampson. The DUKE has had the pleasure of hosting many wonderful wine seminars and dinners with all of the members of this great team over the last 20 years. One of the most memorable highlights was teaming up to introduce the first release of the Nickel & Nickel wines - the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignons. We are delighted to have our "special friend" Larry join us this evening to share his memories as well as some of the latest releases from all three wineries.

Our relationship with Doug Margerum goes back over two decades. First, as very friendly competitors (Doug previously owned the Wine Cask store and restaurant in Santa Barbara). Doug and the DUKE have shared many ideas as merchants over the years, including fine- tuning the "futures" program for Central Coast wines. For several years now, the DUKE has been a key retailer for his Margerum wines from Santa Barbara County. In his retirement from retailing, Doug now spends 100% of his time building the Margerum Wine Company. We are truly happy to have our "special friend" Doug with us to join in our celebration and show some of his world-class wines.
