2012 Alto Moncayo Garnacha Campo de Borja Veratón

If you’re a fan of California Rhône producers from Paso, Napa, or Santa Barbara, or a fan of big Spanish Reds you’ll love this hedonistic, well-structured Grenache!

Our Impressions:
Veraton is the "entry level" wine from Alto Moncayo. It is 100% Garnacha (Grenache) from 30 to 90 year old vines in the Campo de Borja. Every vintage since 2004 has been rated 90+ by the Wine Advocate and the International Wine Cellar.

A rich, full-bodied wine with lots of fruit and power. The Bodegas Alto Moncayo, along with its sister property El Nido in Jumilla, combines the talents of local growers and winemakers with Australia’s super-star winemaker, Chris Ringland. The partnership has the ability to cherry-pick the best parcels of old vine Garnacha from Borsao’s extensive holdings in the region, nearly 2,000 acres. “Veraton” offers up a nose of incredible intensity showing Asian five-spice powder, ginger, boysenberry, cedar and toasty oak. The palate fills out with luscious fruit that can only be described as a bowl full of ripe Bing black cherries. The exotic spiciness of the nose also follows through on the palate with hints of cardamom, and brown sugar. What makes this wine excel is the band of acidity playing with the viscosity on the palate that enlivens and enriches it all. This is due to the high elevation of Moncayo's vineyard. We only get a small amount of this wine, so please don’t hesitate as it will be gone quickly!

Wine Advocate, Robert Parker, 93Pts, Nov 2014:
"Bodegas Alto Moncayo started in 2001 as a collaboration between importer Jorge Ordoñez, American importer Dan Phillips, Australian winemaker Chris Ringland and others. Located near the town of Borja, the 210 acres of vineyards are head-pruned, old Grenache vines planted at 3,000 feet above sea level in poorly nourished soils of slate, clay, chalk and quartzite. They make a number of cuvées, the most famous being the more expensive Alto Moncayo and the Aquilon.

Their inexpensive offering is the 2012 Veraton, a 100% Grenache aged in 60% new French and 40% American oak for 17 months before being bottled without filtration. It is a powerful, full-throttle, pedal-to-the-metal red boasting a dense purple color, and a sweet blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, lavender, licorice and earth notes intermixed with a touch of new oak. Stylistically, this is a modern, massively intense, rich wine that over-delivers in many ways. However, it is not for consumers looking for shy, restrained and delicate wines. It should drink well for a decade."

Winery Notes:
"Joint venture of Jose Miguel San Martin, Jorge Ordonez, Bodegas Borsao and Dan Phillips in conjunction with Chris Ringland. Winery is located in the town of Bulbuente. Grapes are sourced from 62 hectares (153.2 acres) of old clone Garnacha vines planted on hillside vineyards oriented to the southwest. A few of the vineyards are terraced. All the vines are vaso trained. The vineyards are located in 3 villages. Very unique soils of red clay (indicative of being rich in iron) mixed with red slate. Because of its hillside location the soils are very poor in organic matter and shallow. A few sites have calcareous soils. Continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Nighttime during the summer brings cool temperatures to moderate the growing season. There is scant rainfall. Inky purple. A heady bouquet evokes ripe red berries, anise, mocha and pungent fresh flowers. Supple and sweet on entry, then more structured in the middle, offering deep, mineral-accented dried strawberry and cherry liqueur flavors. Takes a spicy turn on the long, sappy finish, which echoes the pure red berry qualities."
