Refreshing and gourmet white Burgundies in Kiwi clothing!
When Melka Brajkovich met her husband Maté in 1957, she knew very little about the world of winemaking. In the decades since she has become recognized as one of the most experienced and knowledgeable women in the New Zealand wine industry.
Her winery, Kumeu River, was founded by her late husband as San Marino Vineyards (its name was changed in the late 1980s). Kumeu River’s wines are fashioned by Michael Brajkovich, who aims to produce world-class Chardonnay: “The taste you should experience with my Chardonnay is light, elegant, and flinty. It will not be a big, bold, buttery oak bash. In the European tradition, I’ve designed my wines to be enjoyed at the table and to be accompanied with the food of your choice.”
He is a man true to his word. Both of these Chardonnays eschew the big butter flavors of American Chardonnays in favor of sharply focused mineral, citrus fruits and green apples. The 2009 is a surprisingly smooth wine despite its vibrant acidity; the 2012 Maté’s is a complex, well-balanced affair with a lingering finish. Both are highly rated and well worth their price points. We are very excited to be bringing the wines of this emerging star winery to you, so come by today and pick up a bottle before they’re gone!
2009 Estate Chardonnay
Wine Advocate, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, 91pts. Oct. 2011:
"The 2009 Estate Chardonnay gives intense notes of ripe apricots, guava, green mango and honey coated nuts with nuances of lightly browned toast and white blossoms. Medium bodied with a silken texture, it gives great concentration, crisp acidity and a long toasty finish. Drinking now, it should cellar to 2016+.”
2012 Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay
Wine Advocate, Neal Martin, 94pts. May 2015:
"Tasting blind at Farr Vintners Kumeu/White Burgundy tasting. The nose of the 2012 Maté’s Vineyard Chardonnay has more intensity and complexity than the 2010: very detailed and harmonious with limestone, nettle and citrus lemon notes. The palate is fresh and poised with lime and green apple, very well-judged acidity with a linear, Chablis-like finish that is an absolute joy. This is an outstanding Maté’s Chardonnay, perhaps the best that Kumeu River produced this year.”
