Au Bon Climat, Qupé & Ici/La-Bas 1998 "Futures" Offering

e have just returned from a visit to the Au Bon Climat/Qupé winery in Santa Maria, CA, where we tasted barrel samples of all of their upcoming releases. As most of you know, the DUKE is privileged to be able to offer most of these outstanding wines on "future" with a savings of up to 20%. The 1998 vintage is, without a doubt, the greatest vintage ever at this world-class winery. We are sharing a shortened version of our tasting notes for your reference when ordering.

We are particularly pleased to introduce a special new Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir. Morgan and Jim Clendenen, who created the famous "Isabelle" in honor of their daughter five years ago, have a new son. In honor of his birth, Jim has made the exceptional 1998 "Knox Alexander" Pinot Noir. What a wine! Elegant, rich and luscious, it rivals the finest of French Burgundies. And what a great vintage to have for its introduction! For this issue of the Vine-Line, we have no limits on this wine, which is certain to become a great collector's item. Offered in 6-packs.

We are also pleased to introduce Au Bon Climat's exciting new "Select Vineyard Assortment" Pinot Noir 6-Pack. See our description below for the great wines in the assortment. All of these wines are very rare, with the Oregon, Dennison Vineyard and Talley Rosemary's not offered individually.

his fifth vintage of "Isabelle" is as beautiful as the daughter for whom it is named. Blended from the best barrels of seven different lots, it is the ultimate of Jim's Pinot Noirs - rich, deep, luscious and RARE! im says this is "clearly the best La Bauge" he has ever made! It is a spectacular rich and robust wine with lots of yummy spicy fruit, great complexity and a long finish. The contributing grapes came from clones of the Bien Nacido Vineyard's "Q"-Block planted on Jim's new Estate Vineyard.

ow - what an impressive wine! This show-stopper has intense aromas and flavors of spicy, rich fruit and oak, with great depth and great length. One of the best ever from this famous vineyard. his Gevrey-Chambertin-style beauty is full-bodied and meaty with wonderful long fruit flavors, great spice and a lovely finish. Formerly known as Piccho & Rincon, the Piccho vineyard was sold and the name was changed to Laetitia.

im says this is "the single most unctuous wine" he can make. The blend of 55% Pinot Gris, 40% Pinot Blanc and 5% Aligoté recalls the original Charlemagne plantings in Burgundy in the year 800. A big nose with aromas of cantaloupe leads to rich, fat fruit flavors of great intensity and an almost syrupy texture. Very Burgundian in style. ob's traditional blockbuster, the grapes for this golden wine were picked very ripe. It is rich, buttery and creamy with nice oak character, great length and balance and a lingering, satisfying finish.

he purest and leanest of all Jim's Chardonnays, this wine is made to age the longest. It has great complexity with good fruit/acid balance and a crisp, clean finish. s usual, barrel tastes show a lean young wine of light golden color, lovely fruit aromas and rich oaky flavors. Jim considers this vintage the best since 1989. Experience proves that this excellent wine will open up beautifully and age very well. ob Lindquist's signature Syrah is, in his words, "so distinctly California and so distinctly Bien Nacido." A bit more elegant than the 1996 and 1997 vintages, it exhibits a deep purple color, an intense taste combination of fine fruit and oak and an outstanding tannin structure. Just beautiful!

ig, bold, rich and powerful. 80% of this great wine went through malolactic fermentation. It has gobs of ripe, tropical fruit flavors and an incredible finish. rom 25-year-old vines grown in the Booneville area of Mendocino County, this Meursault-like wine is smoky, earthy and ripe with flavors of Bartlett pears and biscuits. Excellent balance of oak, fruit and acid with moderate alcohol.

very golden, full, rich powerful Montrachet-style wine that had a very long fermentation. Aromas of pineapple and white truffles with incredible flavors of French bread and luscious tropical fruit highlight its Burgundian characteristics. classic year for Oregon... great weather with no rain during harvest, allowing great ripeness... helped Jim produce this delicious Pinot Noir exhibiting bright fruit, black cherry and vanillin flavors with good acid structure and balance. Very popular at our recent "Super Seminar" preview.

e are pleased to offer "Futures" on the excellent Chateau Montelena 1998 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. This program has been very successful in the past and we expect strong response this year as well!

At our recent barrel tasting of the 1998 vintage, we found the wine to be deep purple in color with loads of rich fruit aromas. The wine possesses delicious rich black cherry flavors backed by an outstanding tannin structure with lots of staying power. This wine is unmistakably Montelena! ...powerful, and drinkable!

The quality of this wine is quite remarkable considering the lateness of the vintage. The grapes, which are usually harvested in September, were harvested between October 11 and October 30. The winery calls this wine "classic cabernet" that is extremely well-balanced with great cassis and earthy tones.

This wine is already receiving outstanding reviews from the press. Robert M. Parker, Jr., in the Wine Advocate scores it 90-92 and says, "The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate exhibits the vineyard's tell-tale black currant, licorice, and loamy soil scents, as well as dense, medium to full body, sweet tannin, and low acidity. It should be ready to drink upon release, and last for 15+ years. The 1998 should turn out to be as good as Montelena's 1988 and 1989, both vintages where this estate surpassed all expectations."

Take advantage of securing this outstanding wine at an outstanding price! Offer good until May 15, 2000 or while supplies last.

e are now offering a "second tranche" of the highly regarded Chateau Montelerna 1997 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine sold out very quickly on its first offering last year, but we have secured some more wine to offer at a still very attractive price.

The winery says: "1997 is the stuff of legends. The weather during harvest was great, if we could have ordered it ala Carte it could not have been better. Even though our crop was very large, lower than normal juice yields in some blocks, combined with exceptional ripening, resulted in a wine that is very dense, deeply colored and extremely flavorful. Similar vintages from the Montelena Estate vineyard are 1986 and 1978."

The press loves this wine, too! Robert M. Parker, Jr., in his journal The Wine Advocate, scored it 94+ and said, "Even by Montelena's standards, this is a powerful wine. There is a spicy, pungent, earthy character dominated by creme de cassis and mineral notions. Full-bodied, stunningly concentrated, and pure, but in need of 4-5 years of bottle age, this blockbuster, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon should evolve for 25-30 years... at the minimum."

We agree. We were extremely impressed when we tried the wine last year. We expect this second offering to sell out quickly. Please contact us and place your order now!

Don't Miss the Great 1997s!

n addition to the great wines on "future," the absolutely outstanding 1997 California Cabernet Sauvignons will be arriving in the months ahead. These wines are purported to rival those of the great 1974 and 1994 vintages. You won't want to miss them! If you would like us to include you on our list of people to contact as the special 1997s arrive, please let us know and we will be happy to do so!

Long Vineyards Scores with the "Big Boys"
Long Vineyards 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon - - $50.00

Finally, the press is paying attention. The spectacular Long Vineyards 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon was given a top 5-Star Rating by the New York Times web site "Wine Today" - the same score as Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle Maya and Beringer Private Reserve! They described it as "big, brash, bold and unapologetic!" The wine is deep purple with aromas of coffee, dried herbs, plum and tobacco, flavors of blackberry, cedar, coffee and licorice with a long Long finish. We love it and, luckily, have a nice supply in stock.
