A Toast to the Memory of
Joe Heitz

ur good friend, Joe Heitz, passed away peacefully on December 16, 2000, in St. Helena, California at the age of 81. We have such fond memories of Joe's spirit and passion and the wonderful wines he and his family produced in the Napa Valley for more than 40 years. He was a true pioneer, leading a team of talented fellow Napa Valley vintners to produce some of the world's greatest wines.

Alice Heitz, David, Joe Heitz and Judy at Heitz Cellars in Napa Valley in 1994.
And did he love his Napa Valley, its people, its earth, its vines and its wines! No one defended his territory with more fervor and sincerity than Joe and, indeed, he had reason to support his stance. And because of his high standards, he forced the competition to excel in what today is possibly the world's greatest wine-growing district.

Joe and his lovely wife Alice were always such good friends to our family and to customers of the Duke of Bourbon. We were fortunate to have known them for 30 years, having shared countless hours and wines together. Joe and Alice were popular guests at many of the "Duke's" Wine Association events. We made numerous visits to the Heitz's winery and home and constantly shared ideas by telephone. So many great memories, we could write a book.

Today, Heitz Cellars is in the competent hands of Joe's daughter, Kathleen, as General Manager, and son, David, as Winemaker and we are confident that they will uphold and continue the traditions established by their legendary father.

The next time you have an opportunity to open a bottle of Heitz Cellar wine, please take a moment to toast Joe and thank him for all the pleasure he made possible for all of us in our wonderful world of wine!!

The Wonderful 1999 Au Bon Climat • Qupé • Hitching Post • Ici/La-Bas "Futures" Offering

e're off and running with our exciting "futures" program on the wonderful 1999 wines of Au Bon Climat, Qupé, Hitching Post and Ici/La-Bas. Our recent barrel-tasting with the "Under One Roof" gang at the winery in the Santa Maria Valley revealed an alluring array of individualized wines with varying degrees of flavors, intensity, complexity, readiness and ageworthiness.

The 1999 vintage at the world-class Au Bon Climat/Qupé Winery was extremely cool and late and resulted in wines of great intensity, with many of the wines showing to be even better than their superb 1998 predecessors. We are proud and privileged to be able to offer most of their outstanding wines on "future" with a savings of up to 20%. We are sharing a shortened version of our tasting notes for your reference when ordering.

Dave with Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat), Bob Lindquist (Qupé) and Frank Ostini (Hitching Post) at the "Duke's" Annual "Futures" barrel tasting at the winery.

Jim Adelman, Au Bon Climat/Qupé General Manager, describes this as "a true, classic Burgundian Pinot Noir. " This namesake of Jim & Morgan Clendenen's son is produced from plantings in their Bien Nacido vineyard. It is more intense than the 1998 version with leesy and cherry characters and a real feel of the "terrior."

Announcing Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon "Futures!"

e are thrilled to offer "futures" on the spectacular Chateau Montelena 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate as well as a "Second Tranche" offering on the wonderful 1998 vintage. The 1999 vintage is being touted as rivaling the 1997 and 1994 vintages in California and the 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon is considered one of the best wines of the vintage. Following are notes from the winery and reviews from Robert M. Parker, Jr. on both of these stellar wines.

"The 1999 vintage was the second consecutive late vintage. The entire growing season was dominated by cool weather leading to a September/ October harvest. A small crop was expected and the crop came in even lighter than the meager forecasts... The problem was low cluster counts. We did not experience an unusual amount of shatter, thank goodness, it was just that the bunches were not there.

"When harvest hit it was with a boom! Just when you think you have seen it all something else appears - this year it was all varieties getting ripe at the same time. We started picking the Montelena Estate Cabernet on September 20th and finished on October 18th.

"The string of great vintages from the mighty nineties stands unbroken... The Cab we saw was literally perfect. It doesn't get any better. We saw very good fruit chemistry for all the Estate Cab blocks - great flavors and ripeness."

Robert M. Parker, Jr. (96-98 points) "...appears to be a worthy competitor to the exceptional 1997. It exhibits spectacular concentration, a multilayered mid-palate, the seamlessness of a great vintage, and a rich, jammy, concentrated finish. The powerful, gorgeously pure black fruits and unctuous texture suggest it will drink well young, yet be capable of 2-3 decades of effortless evolution."

We are also offering a second "chance" with a Second Tranche of the 1998 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon, Estate.

Here are some of the notes from Chateau Montelena about this star of the 1998 vintage, which is proving to be even better than the first estimates!

"The quality is remarkable, given the lateness of the year. The intensity of the vintage is very classic Cabernet, extremely well balanced. We will see less of the superripe black fruit and more classical claret style this vintage. Great flavors and ripeness and very good chemistry. Skin to juice ratio was normal so the extraction is very good. Interestingly, the vintage did not require higher sugars to achieve ripeness, as would be typical of a late year, so the alcohols are normal with very complex flavors. We are expecting to see the intensity of the vintage being very classic cabernet, extremely well balanced, less California superripe and more cassis and terroir earthy tones."

Robert M. Parker, Jr. (93 points) "...unquestionably one of the vintage's most successful wines. Rich, complex, and full-bodied, it is more enjoyable to drink now than the super-sized 1997. Bravo Bo Barrett and his winemaking team for fashioning a wine of such character."

We were fortunate to have tried this wine recently and we agree whole-heartedly.. it is terrific!

Limited-Edition "Cab Frank" -
Featuring Artwork by Frank Sinatra

hat a coup! We're so excited to be one of the few select retailers to offer the KAHN WINERY 1999 CAB FRANK! This limited-edition wine features a self-portrait by the late Frank Sinatra which depicts him as a clown. Kahn Winery partners Andrew Kahn and Christian Gavin created this very delicious and fruity Cabernet Franc in honor of Mr. Sinatra, whose songs have played an important part in their lives. In fact, they played Sinatra albums at all stages of the winemaking process. This project has received the blessing of the Sinatra Family and a portion of the proceeds will go to the Frank Sinatra Foundation, which supports a variety of educational causes.

Kahn Winery, founded in 1996 in Santa Barbara County, produces several other intriguing wines, including the two Rhône blends we have just acquired. 1999 Cuvée Jacques White, a blend of 50% Viognier and 50% Marsanne, has a fruity and floral nose and is a delicious replacement for Chardonnay. 1998 Cuvée Jacques Red is a very approachable blend of Grenache, Merlot and Syrah from the Santa Ynez Valley that goes well with any meal, be it Chicken Picatta or Porterhouse Steak. Try these delightful wines now and look for future releases from the dynamic young Kahn duo.
