Great Bargains from the Duke!

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

The Duke was overwhelmed by the response to the email we sent yesterday about the sensational Rhône offering from Domaine "la Garrique." We sold out all we had in less than two hours. We are desperately trying to find more and will let you know if that happens. We sincerely appreciate your interest and patronage and are sorry that we couldn't accommodate everyone's orders.

One of the recurring themes in our emails is the great bargains that the Duke has in wine. Here's our current list starting with the winning Montinore Estate Chardonnay.

Montinore Estate 1999 Chardonnay, Winemaker's Reserve

Here is a full-bodied, elegantly styled Chardonnay that is great for sipping but will still stand up to the heartier fish and fowl meals. Originally $22.00 per bottle, this super wine is a super bargain at $6.99 per bottle or $39.00 per 6-pack case.

Castello di Gabbiano 2001 Pinot Grigio

This wine is light-bodied, refreshing and perfect for sipping on the veranda or patio. The price is just about as good as the wine at $4.99 per bottle. Buy a case and the Duke will make the price a mere $47.88 (just $3.99 per bottle).

Mark West 2000 Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County

This is a hand-crafted wine that will go nicely with fish and poultry dishes and other light meals. The price is on the light side as well - just $2.99 per bottle. We were happy to obtain this great closeout price on the last few cases of the 2000 vintage to bring you a true bargain!

Joseph Phelps 2000 Pastiche

We have offered this wine before and have received incredible response. So many of you know of the wine that it is almost redundant to talk about it. It is an easy-drinking blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre. Its medium body and fresh fruit flavors seem to be made to go with those ribs or hamburgers off the grill. The price is still the unbelievably low $5.99 per bottle or just $60.00 per case.

Joseph Phelps 1998 Wolfgang Puck Signature Red

This is Pastiche's older brother. The blend is very similar to Pastiche and will taste great with a wide variety of foods. The price is the same as Pastiche at just $5.99 per bottle or $60.00 per case.

Christian Moueix 2000 Merlot

A great example of the sensational 2000 vintage in Bordeaux, it will stand right up to the "beefiest" steak you can find and not shoot your budget into next week. This tasty Merlot, featuring great fruit flavors and soft, supple tannins, will only set you back $6.99 per bottle.

Call the Duke if you need some everyday wine at a bargain price.

Parker gives 91 points!

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

The Duke is always on the prowl for those little gems in the wine world and especially when the gem comes at an incredible bargain. We have found what we think is an eye-poppin', heart-stoppin' winner for you...

Domaine "la Garrique" 2001 Cuvée Romaine
Côtes du Rhône

Many wine writers are raving about wines from the southern Rhone region, especially the outstanding 2001 vintage. Domaine "la Garrique" is a large estate in Vacqueyras and has long been a leader in producing wines from organically farmed grapes. Wines from this area are generally more full-bodied because the large, flat stones in the vineyard retain the sun's warmth, enabling the grapes to achieve a greater ripeness than neighboring areas, especially in challenging vintages.

Cuvée Romaine, so named because of the large number of Roman artifacts that have been discovered on the property, is a big, dark wine that is bottled unfiltered. It offers a mouthful of spice, black fruit, black pepper and vanilla followed by a lingering finish. The Wine Advocate, Robert Parker's publication, gives Cuvée Romaine 91 of 100 points and says:
"Believe me this wine will shock the bejesus out of you... A thick, inky purple color is followed by a knockout perfume of melted licorice, roasted meats, black cherries and blackberry jam... The texture is opulent, and the wine is an astonishing value. Ka-boom!" [emphasis added]

The Duke, using his wizardly wine-buying skills, is able to bring this wonderful wine to you at $11.50 per bottle. Buy 6 or more and get them for just $9.99 per bottle. His wizardly skills did not include being able to find large amounts (maybe Harry Potter could have done better), so we have to warn you that quantities are limited. With Parker giving it the nod, what we have is sure to go quickly. Don't be left out!

A big reminder for those of you that have enjoyed the Montinore Estate 1999 Chardonnay, Winemaker's Reserve and a bigger reminder for those of you that haven't tasted it yet. . . We have been able to acquire more of this outstanding wine. Made to retail at $22.00 per bottle, the Duke is offering it at $6.99 per bottle or an even more exciting $39.00 per 6-pack case.

Remember, we can ship almost anywhere. Call and order today.

Central Coast Futures Program - Last Call!

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

We're sure that you've heard "Last Call!" sometime during this or a previous lifetime. It pains us to have to say it in regards to our Central Coast Futures offering on the one hand, but, on the other hand, we are a few days closer to having those incredible wines in hand. The wineries involved in this offering, Au Bon Climat, Hitching Post, Margerum, Qupé and Vita Nova, all hail the 2001 vintage as "Sensational". In fact, Jim Clendenen declared the 2001 vintage as the best he has ever had at Au Bon Climat.

We usually close the offering on June 15, but the wineries have allowed us to hold it open until July 1, 2003. If you have procrastinated, this is one last chance to score some outstanding wines at substantial savings over the expected retail prices when the wines are released.

If you want to review our tasting notes, follow either of these two links: Central Coast Futures Part I; Central Coast Futures Part II. You are always welcome to call us directly to discuss what's available.

Fortunately, for you fans of the fabulous ABC Pinot Noirs, the Isabelle bottling is still available. Here is a little memory refresher if you had forgotten which wines were offered.

"Dinner with the Wines of
Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix...
at POSTO"

Special Guest:
Edouard Moueix

Dear Wine Associates:
We are delighted to invite you to join us on Thursday, July 17, 2003, as we present "Dinner with the Wines of Etablissements Jean-Pierre Moueix... at POSTO" featuring our very special guest Edouard Moueix and his family's wines of the 2000 Bordeaux Vintage. Edouard is the grandson of Jean-Pierre Moueix and the son of Christian Moueix, whose firm owns several great wine properties, including the famed Pétrus in Pomerol and the outstanding Dominus Estate in Napa Valley.

Edouard grew up in Bordeaux experiencing the harvests of his family's châteaux. He attended high school in Paris, then the University of California, Berkeley. He completed his business degree at The European Business School in London. Today, he is working with Maisons Marques & Domaines, the import firm of Champagne Louis Roederer, which represents several wines of his family's Bordeaux châteaux as well as Dominus Estate. His position in the firm is Sales Manager of Dominus Estate and Napanook wines. We have met Edouard and can assure you that he is as charming as his famous father, Christian.

Of course, the wines will speak for themselves. All but one of the Bordeaux wines will be from the already legendary 2000 vintage. We will begin the evening with a real treat-Champagne Louis Roederer, Brut Premier from a rare Methuselah bottle-and finish with the magnificent 1990 Château Magdelaine.

Posto Proprietor Piero Selvaggio's talented Executive Chef Steve Samson and General Manager Santo Selvaggio have designed a delectable menu to complement the superlative Moueix wines, so we are assured of a remarkably delicious and enjoyable evening.

2000 Bordeaux - Featuring Chateau Marquis de Terme

Bonjour from the Duke of Bourbon!

The Duke's infatuation with the 2000 vintage is becoming a full-fledged l'affaire d'amour. Year 2000 is being acclaimed as the best Bordeaux vintage ever - must be that millennium thing. The wines are incredible and the prices are even better. We have tried many of the wines that are available and have chosen a few to feature in our missives to you.

This note features the sensational Chateau Marquis de Terme from the Margaux region of Bordeaux. The Wine Spectator rates the wine at 92 on their scale and says:

"Lots of earthy, crushed berry and floral aromas. Full-bodied, with lots of good fruit and moist velvety tannins. Long finish. Don't forget this estate. . . . . . it makes very good wines in top vintages."

We are featuring Chateau Marquis de Terme for $32.00 per bottle. We will give a 5% discount with the purchase of 6 or more bottles and 10% with the purchase of 24 or more. You can also mix and match from the following list for purposes of the discount.

Wine Appellation Price
Chateau La Couspade (WS 92) St.-Emilion $69.99

All Rise!! The court of wine (and price) appreciation is now in session.

The Duke has done it again. We have several previous convictions for finding great wine at incredibly low prices. Exhibit A - Chateau Woltner 1998 Chardonnay, Howell Mountain at $6.99 per bottle or just $72.00 per case. Exhibit B - Gabbiano 2001 Pinot Grigio at just $4.99 per bottle or $47.88 per case.

Now another count has been filed against us. We found a sensational 1999 Chardonnay, Winemaker's Reserve from the Montinore Estate in Oregon, originally retailing for $22.00 per bottle, and are offering it for sale at $6.99 per bottle or just $39.00 per 6-pack case.

Here is our defense:

Montinore Estate is located in the northern end of the Willamette Valley appellation just 30 miles west of Portland. The weather conditions are similar to those in Burgundy and are ideal for growing Chardonnay. All the grapes are estate grown. The wines are hand-crafted, true to their varietal characteristics and meant to go with foods. They are flavorful, full-bodied and balanced. We tasted this wine and found it delightful. It opens on the nose with ripe apples, butter and toasty oak followed by flavors of apple, pineapple and hazelnuts. The finish is long and filled with fruit. Yummy!

Expert witnesses testify on our behalf also. Wine Spectator rates it "Very Good." The Beverage Testing Institute says "Highly Recommended."

Being the judge, you will certainly find the Duke "Guilty" of once again selling incredible wine at low prices. But once you taste the wine, we're sure you will give us a suspended sentence.

This session of the court is now adjourned.

Call us with your verdict.

A Symphony of Wine

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

As supporters of both the New West Symphony and the Symphony of Wine, David and Judy Breitstein and the Duke of the Bourbon would like to invite you to attend the Symphony of Wine charity wine dinner and auction on Sunday, June 22, 2003 at 3:00 PM.

This year the event will be held at Otis Chandler's private car museum in Oxnard, California. The museum features over 50 vintage cars (including American and European touring cars, sports cars, and muscle cars) and a collection of over 60 vintage motorcycles. This is truly a unique venue that will appeal to any collector.

Our good friend Ken Volk of Wild Horse will be this year's "Maestro of Wine & Food," following in the footsteps of Frank Ostini of the Hitching Post Restaurant and Winery and Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat.

The outstanding cuisine prepared on the spot by the talented chefs of Valentino's, The Wine Cask and Citronelle, an exciting live auction conducted by famed auctioneer David Reynolds, a unique venue among an amazing collection - all reasons to attend the 2003 Symphony of Wine.

Dinner wines being served include: Joseph Phelps Vineyards 1999 Insignia; Nickel & Nickel 2000 Merlot, Harris Ranch; Wild Horse Cheval Sauvage 2001 Pinot Noir; Wild Horse Equus 2000 Viognier; Ortman Family Vineyards 2001 Chardonnay; Opolo Vineyards 2000 Estate Pinot Noir; and Bonny Doon Vineyard Framboise.

The attendance is limited to 150 invited guests, which gives everyone the chance to get into the bidding and bring home a desired lot. Below is a just a sample of the items that will be included in the live auction, a complete catalog will be available one week before the event.

The cost for this very special charity event is $250.00 per person. We hope you can join us.

To sign up, please contact David at the Duke of Bourbon (818-341-1234, email duke@dukeofbourbon.com) or Katy at the Symphony of Wine (310-748-5289, e-mail symphony.ofwine@verizon.net).

More 2000 Bordeaux - Including LA TIMES' "Wine Of The Week"

Bonjour from the Duke of Bourbon!

The Duke is really excited about the terrific 2000 vintage wines coming from Bordeaux. We have been culling through those wines to find the finest quality at the best price possible. We believe we have found a real winner in La Croix de Beaucaillou. And, guess what! The Los Angeles Times just selected it as the "Wine of the Week" in their May 28, 2003, edition.

This is the second wine from the well-known Château Ducru-Beaucaillou, in St.-Julien. The grapes are grown in gravelly soil near the Gironde River. The vineyard is well-named, "des beaux caillox" (of the beautiful pebbles). Generally, La Croix de Beaucaillou is made from younger vines than the grand vin and usually contains a bit more Merlot. The Merlot is revealed in the succulence and flesh of the wine. Despite its accessibility, the wine can live quite easily for 10-12 years. Noted wine critic Robert Parker rates it up to 90 points and calls it a "second label seek-out." Nothing is neglected to achieve the very highest quality. Many experts consider Ducru-Beaucaillou (the 2000 vintage sells for approximately $125.00) to be the quintessential wine of the Medoc and perhaps of all of Bordeaux.

We have 2000 La Croix de Beaucaillou available for you at $36.00 per bottle.

We know we disappointed a few of you when our supply of the highly rated Chateau Charmail sold out so quickly last week. We searched diligently for a replacement and found Chateau Malecasse, a neighbor of Chateau Charmail, a wine that exceeded even our lofty expectations. This is a classy wine with loads of crushed raspberries, minerals and spices on the nose. It is full-bodied and concentrated, yet refined. The Wine Spectator calls it "elegant claret" and "seriously good" and rates it 90 points on their scale.

We have 2000 Chateau Malecasse available for you at $22.50 per bottle. Sorry, but we have to limit purchases to 6 bottles per order.

We are pleased to offer you discounts of 5% with the purchase of 6 or more bottles and 10% with the purchase of 24 or more bottles. Both of our featured wines and the ones listed below qualify for the discounts.

We also have the following 2000 Bordeaux available as well (new arrivals are in bold):

    Wine Appellation Price
    Chateau La Couspade (WS 92) St.-Emilion $69.99
    Chateau Bahans Haut-Brion (WS 90) Pessac-Leognan $69.50
Chateau Clos des Jacobins (Duke 93) St. Emilion $46.00
    Chateau Saint-Pierre (RP 89+) St. Julien $42.00
    Chateau Larrivet-Haut-Brion (RP 90-92) Pessac-Leognan $41.50
Chateau La Tourette (WS 92-94) Pauillac $37.50
Clos l'Eglise (WS 90) Cotes de Castillon $36.00
Chateau Marquis de Terme (Duke 90) Margaux $32.00
Chateau Les Trois Croix (WS 90) Fronsac $24.50
Ch. La Fleur Saint Georges (Duke 90) Pomerol $18.99
Chateau Le Plantey Cotes de Castillon $15.99

May Be The Le Pin Of Napa Valley! - Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignon

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

Rerun season is here for television. While the Duke is not into reruns on TV, we don't object to sending out the occasional email for a second time. We originally sent this email in January and created a sensation. The response to the email was so strong that Hundred Acre made additional wine available to the Duke. We knew we were right when we said we had a "big-time winner." There was even a lengthy thread on one of the wine-oriented bulletin boards in reaction to that note. Here is the substance of that original email.

The Duke has found another "big-time winner" - Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignon! We are happy to be involved in the inaugural vintage of this top-notch, new winery. Hundred Acre will be another entry into the Napa cult winery category.

We recently tasted this gem with winery and vineyard owner Jayson Woodbridge. All we could say was, "WOW!!" The intensity of the wine certainly belies the whimsical name of the winery.

Here are a few facts about Hundred Acre:
    • The winemaker: Philippe Melka has worked at both Petrus and Chateau Haut-Brion. He is also the winemaker for Vineyard 29 and was just named winemaker for Bryant Family Vineyards.

    • The grapes for Hundred Acre wine come from a single vineyard located just north of St. Helena at the base of Howell Mountain. It is farmed by Jim Barbour, who has farmed some of the finest vineyards in Napa Valley for over 25 years. He has teamed with Heidi Barrett on several projects, including Screaming Eagle and Grace Family Vineyards. The farming practices are meticulous and the yields are only about 1.4 tons per acre.

    • Robert Parker has reviewed both the initial 2000 vintage (in bottle) and the 2001 vintage (in barrel):

"These are the first two vintages produced at this tightly spaced vineyard on the Silverado Trail, north of St. Helena, near the Rombauer Vineyard. Both are impressive efforts fashioned by Philippe Melka, who believes this site has unlimited potential. There will be approximately 1,000 cases of the 2000 (the first crop harvested). An incredibly sexy, opulent, "pedal to the metal" Cabernet, its dense purple color is followed by unfettered, pure crème de cassis and cherry jam aromas. Somehow, its 100% new oak aging has been totally absorbed by the wine's richness. Supple-textured and voluptuous, it is a glorious Cabernet Sauvignon fruit bomb with abundant underlying tannin and structure. This lush, hedonistic 2000 will drink well for 10-15 years."

Looking ahead, Parker has said that Hundred Acre "may be the Le Pin of Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon."

    Extra Touches:
    1. The packaging is stunning.

    2. The 23K gold ring on the neck of the bottle signifies Hundred Acre's bond of quality and their vow never to compromise in the making of their incredible wine.

    3. The embossed labels are on currency-grade paper and produced by Smythson of Bond Street, printers to Her Majesty, The Queen of England.

    4. The wooden 3-packs are hand-made, tongue-and-groove "fortresses" fastened with furniture quality screws.

    5. Each pack contains a specially made French SK screwdriver to cope with opening the "fortress."

    6. The top of the wooden box is wood-burned and the label on the bottle is embossed with the opening lines of Homer's Odyssey, signifying triumph over adversity.

    7. No detail has been overlooked in either the growing of the grapes, the making of the wine or the packaging itself.

The price for the inaugural 2000 vintage is $150.00 per bottle, $450.00 for the custom-made wooden 3-pack or $375.00 for the etched magnum, also in a custom-made wooden box. The Duke has a good supply of this very limited, rare wine available.

    $2.99 Sauvignon Blanc From Sonoma!

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

Things are heating up in Canoga Park! As the weather warms rather quickly to summertime temperatures, the demand for those light, easy-drinking white wines also rises quickly. Although the summer may come as a surprise to some, it won't to the Duke. We have been collecting just the right wines at really reasonable prices to help you through those hot summer days and maybe that Memorial Day barbecue and beyond.
    Check out our suggestions.

Mark West 2000 Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County
Mark West Winery, owned by Courtney and Derek Benham, is in the Russian River region of Sonoma Valley. They have handcrafted a delicious wine with good body and a rich mouth-feel. The wine will go nicely with fish and poultry dishes and other light meals. The price is on the light side as well - just $2.99 per bottle. We were happy to obtain this great closeout price on the last few cases of the 2000 vintage to bring you a true bargain!

Castello di Gabbiano 2001 Pinot Grigio
Several customers have commented that they thought Gabbiano only made a Chianti. Well, they do make a sensational Chianti and they also make a Pinot Grigio that is just as tasty. The wine is light-bodied with a crisp best described as "refreshing" and perfect for sipping on the veranda or patio. Match it with a green salad and Freedom bread with flaky crust and you have the perfect summer lunch. The price is just about as good as the wine at $4.99 per bottle. Buy a case and the Duke will make the price a mere $47.88 (just $3.99 per bottle).

Joseph Phelps 2000 Pastiche (Yes, we know it's not white wine.)

Christian Moueix 2000 Merlot (You're right! Another red wine.)
Christian Moueix is the owner of the famed "Powerhouse of Pomerol," Petrus, and of the Napa Valley standout, Dominus. He has produced this sensational wine from the incredible 2000 vintage in Bordeaux for those of you who want a more substantial wine to go with those 2"-thick New York Strips from the grill. It will stand right up to the "beefiest" steak you can find and not shoot your budget into next week. This tasty Merlot, featuring great fruit flavors and soft, supple tannins, will only set you back $6.99 per bottle.

    A TOUR OF BURGUNDY
    With the Wines of
    MAISON JOSEPH DROUHIN

Dear Wine Associates: It is a pleasure to invite you to join us Tuesday, June 24, 2003, for a fascinating seminar featuring "A TOUR OF BURGUNDY with the Wines of MAISON JOSEPH DROUHIN." Founded in 1880, this famous "negociant firm" located in the heart of Beaune, France, produces some of the world's finest wines from some of France's most famous Burgundian vineyards. In addition, the Drouhin Family owns the outstanding U.S. winery, Domaine Drouhin Oregon.

The House of Drouhin produces many wines. In fact, 80 different wines are offered in limited (some extremely limited) quantities to the U.S.A. Chardonnay for White Burgundy and Pinot Noir for Red Burgundy are the main grapes used in this treasured appellation. The three massive cellars (all preserved in their original states) of the Drouhin Family include one with Gothic architecture and vaulted ceilings built in the 13th Century, one situated beneath the 14th Century former palace of the Dukes of Burgundy and one located under the ancient Parliament of Beaune - a cellar that was built for the kings of France in the 16th Century.

Our "tour guide" for this seminar will be NETTA WILLIAMS, the long-time and knowledgeable Regional Sales Manager for Maison Joseph Drouhin. Netta will lead us in our tasting of several barrel sample wines which are being sent over from the Drouhin Cellars especially for our event. This promises to be an illuminating experience for all of us. Among the treats will be a tiny taste of the 2001 Montrachet, Marquis de Laguiche - Grand Cru and the 2001 Clos de Vougeot - Grand Cru. In addition, we will show three wines from the Drouhins' Oregon property. All of the wines served will be available to order at very special "futures" pricing for delivery in November, 2003.

    2000 Bordeaux Are Here!

Bonjour from the Duke of Bourbon!

The staff of the Duke has the great good fortune to have been tasting of some of the early arrivals of 2000 Bordeaux over the last few months. The 2000 vintage is thought to be the best ever by most experts and certainly the best since the storied 1961 vintage. The wines we tasted definitely lived up to the acclaim. After tasting and re-tasting the wines released thus far (it's a difficult job, but we sacrifice ourselves), we narrowed the field down to the ones listed below. We thought this group provided the best value and the highest quality.

Demand is exceptionally high due to the great strength of the vintage and supplies are short because of the unusually large amount of wine that was sold on futures. In view of the strong demand, we feel that the wines are very fairly priced. For example, Chateau Charmail, given 93 points by Parker, is a steal at $25.00. Through May 17, 2003, the Duke will sweeten the offering by subtracting 5% on orders of at least 6 bottles and 10% on orders of 24 bottles or more.

    We offer for your consideration:
    Wine Appellation Price
Chateau Clos des Jacobins (Duke 93) St. Emilion $46.00
    Chateau Rauzan-Gassies (WS 92) Margaux $43.50
    Chateau Saint-Pierre (RP 89+) St. Julien $42.00
    Chateau Larrivet-Haut-Brion (RP 90-92) Pessac-Leognan $41.50
Chateau La Tourette (WS 92-94) Pauillac $37.50
La Croix de Beaucaillou (Duke 90) St. Julien $36.00
Chateau Marquis de Terme (Duke 90) Margaux $32.00
    Chateau Haut-Beausejour (WS 89) St.-Estephe $29.99
Chateau Charmail (RP 93) (Limit 1 case) Haut Medoc $25.00
Chateau D'Aurilhac (WS 89-91) Haut Medoc SOLD OUT
Chateau Sainte-Colombe (RP 88) Cotes de Castillon SOLD OUT
Chateau Le Plantey Cotes de Castillon $15.99

Central Coast Futures Program - Part II
Featuring the wines of Au Bon Climat, Qupe, Hitching Post and Margerum.

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon!

We are pleased to continue our annual Central Coast Futures offering with two incredible wines from Hitching Post Winery and three equally sensational wines from Margerum Wine Company. Hitching Post partners Frank Ostini and Gray Hartley have been making exceptional wines from the Central Coast for years and the 2001 effort is right up there with their best. Doug Margerum, a strong proponent of the "garagiste" style of winemaking - small, handcrafted and personal - is a recent entrant into the winemaking field. Like Frank and Gray, he has been a leading restaurateur in Santa Barbara, having owned the Wine Cask for many years.

Before we talk about the yet-to-be released wines, we would be derelict if we didn't tell you about the Hitching Post 2001 Santa Barbara County bottling of their Pinot Noir. Frank and Gray normally would have released this wine in August, 2002, but the wine is so special that they decided to leave it in barrel for an additional 7 months, the same wood treatment given to their top-of-the-line bottlings. The wine has an expansive aroma of cherries and gentle spice leading to a palate that is round and full of fruit flavors, the hallmark of Hitching Post wines. While the retail price is $25.00, the Duke can offer it to you for current delivery at $19.99, a discount of 20%, while supplies last. Members of the Duke's staff tasted this wine most recently at the Santa Barbara Vintner's Festival - it was absolutely super!

    Now, back to the futures!!

Hitching Post 2001 Pinot Noir, Highliner - October 2003 Release

    Price $40.00; Futures Price $31.99

This is the fifth vintage of the famed Highliner and it is better than ever. Frank and Gray have chosen the best barrels from the best vineyard sites to bring you a wine that will definitely wow you. It is very aromatic with flavors of oak and dark fruit. It is 'well-stuffed' and built to age. The hedonists among us will be hard-put not to consume this decadent wine in its youth.

Hitching Post 2001 Syrah, Purisima Mountain Vineyard - October 2003 Release

    Price $30.00; Futures Price $23.99

This is the second vintage from this new Syrah vineyard and a great follow-up to the very successful 2000 vintage. The 2001 vintage is richer and more exciting with complex flavors of blueberry, beef and white pepper. This one definitely pushes the flavor and intensity buttons all the way down - a real show-stopper from two gentlemen known for their elegant red wines.

Margerum 2002 Sauvignon Blanc, Vogelzang Vineyard - May 2003 Release

(Not really a "future", but we're still selling a tiny bit of it at an introductory price.)

    Price $24.00; Futures Price $18.99

This is Doug Margerum's "dream Sauvignon Blanc." Working with the vineyard owners, Doug dropped fruit and leaves to reduce the crop and obtain the highest quality fruit possible. The wine was fermented in stainless steel using the famous "Cloudy Bay yeast." The results are mouthwatering - lush, concentrated gooseberry and grapefruit flavors backed by mineral notes and bright acidity. In a word, racy. The brilliant first impression leads to a balanced finish. Served at our Wine Association event on May 1 to great acclaim.

    Margerum 2002 M5, Santa Ynez Valley - August 15, 2003 Release

    Price $25.00; Futures Price $19.99

M5 is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourverdre, Cinsault and Counoise and very reminiscent of a great Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The grapes are sourced from some of the top vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley and have produced a wine with much substance. Violets, licorice, spice, pepper and a hint of spearmint come together to meet bold tannins melded with sweet red and dark fruit. The wine is intense and dark and the finish long and memorable. We served barrel samples of this wine at our seminar on May 1 - we have rarely seen a response as popular as this one. Doug has hit one out of the park this time. In fact, James Laube previewed this wine in barrel and scored it 90-95 points on the Wine Spectator scale.

Margerum 2002 Syrah, Great Oaks Ranch Vineyard - August 15, 2003 Release

    Price $30.00; Futures Price $23.99

Here is another tremendous wine from Margerum - sexy, exotic and complex. It has all the components you expect in a great Syrah. Dark and intense, the flavors are incredible. This single-vineyard wine is "great," just like the name of the vineyard. It is not a wine to be taken lightly. We also served barrel samples of this wine at our May 1st event and, based on the verbal responses as well as the orders we received, it is sure to be highly sought-after and a real collector's item (only 150 cases produced). Mr. Laube also gave this wine a 90-95 score based on the barrel sample he tasted.

We are also continuing the special futures offer on the extraordinary 2001 Au Bon Climat and Qupe wines to be delivered in August of 2003. Here is the list (minus the tasting notes).

OK, take me to the tasting notes.

    Celebrate the Duke's 36th!

Cheers from the Duke of Bourbon! Not only "Cheers" but a giant "THANK YOU" for the last 36 years. To celebrate the Duke's 36th Anniversary today, we're offering a special wine at a special savings. Please read on for further details.

In honor of the Duke's 36th Anniversary, Michael Martini of Louis M. Martini Winery created a special blend of Cabernet Sauvignon from their Ghost Pines Vineyard in the Chiles Valley appellation of Napa Valley. We featured the wine at our gala anniversary celebration last May. Here we are, a year later, and the wine is better than ever. The debut of the Duke's anniversary wine attracted a lot of attention and we have had a steady flow of reorders for it, as much for the high quality of the product as for the moderate price.

Many of you have enjoyed this wine, but, for those of you who haven't, here is a little tease. The initial aromas are a spicy, cedar-briar component which broadens into red cherry and white pepper. The overall balance is very bright and stunning, with lively tannins and deep, rich flavors. The finish is long and elegant. The wine is certainly drinkable right now, but it can easily age another decade or more. Best of all, it is affordable enough for everyday drinking, but stylish enough for a special occasion.

The true value of this high-quality wine is in the $30.00 - $35.00 price range, but the Duke is selling our Louis M. Martini 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Duke's 35th Anniversary Cuvée at the amazing price of $19.99 per bottle.

But, wait!! We have a special anniversary savings for you for the entire month of May. Buy a full case and we will subtract a 'buck-a-year,' making the final price just $204.00 per case! OK, OK, if you only want 6, we'll do that for $102.00.

We hope you enjoy the wine as much as we have enjoyed serving you for these last 36 years.

Call us today at 818-341-1234 or outside California at 1-800-4-FINE-WINE.
